google street view = creepy?

at first i thought the google street view tool was cool, and at times i still do. but there are a few things in the news lately that make me wonder…

first, this guy gets caught cheating on his wife, basically because his car was spotted by her at his boo’s house via street view. now, there’s some speculation to the veracity of this report, but my next example is clearly not an urban legend.

in dallas yesterday, in what can only be described as a horrible tragedy, a crossing guard was hit and killed by a drunk driver. the dallas morning news posted this story, which at the bottom has a google street view image which clearly shows the crossing guard who was killed, some time before the incident, sitting at his post.

EDIT —– i’d like to remark further on the fact that this story is just so sad. clearly just a good man living his life - one that centers on service - who was killed in a senseless mess of stupidity. i refuse to call it an accident, because accidents don’t happen when you get shitfaced (or take pain pills, legally or not), and do shit you shouldn’t be doing once you’ve gotten shitfaced (legally or illegally). those who know me know that i may not always make the most responsible choices in my life, but i believe about myself that if i messed up big time, like this, i wouldn’t have the gall to call it an “accident”. i think i’d pony up and say i fucked up. wouldn’t make it any better for the people whose lives i ruined, but at least it would be the truth. —- END EDIT

now, i realize this isn’t real time imaging, but certainly it’s something our government (and likely many others) have the capability of employing at their whim. remember “enemy of the state” with will smith and gene hackman? yeah. anyway, i’ll concede that there’s little i or you can do to keep the government from peeking in on us if it so desires, but i find it a little bothersome to think that anyone could peek in on me. i figure it’s only a matter of time before the street view app becomes one that is updated more frequently. seriously, i blog, facebook, and twitter - if i want you to know where i am and what i’m doing i think i’ve got it covered. i don’t need google’s help.
